HIGH COAST WINTER HIKE
DISCOVERY
Join us for a proper winter adventure and three unforgettable days exploring some of the High Coast’s greatest highlights when winter is at its most spectacular. Each day takes us to a new area with snow-covered mountains, deep forests and sweeping views across the World Heritage Site – with FriluftsByn as our base.
We’ve selected beautiful day hikes through some of the area’s most spectacular landscapes. If you want to explore even more, you can add an extra summit or a longer route towards the end of each day and make the adventure even bigger.
You hike at your own pace, with guides at the front and back and participants from around the world sharing the experience. We take care of snowshoes, food, transport and courses – and after three days filled with winter landscapes, incredible views and new experiences, we come together for the After-Hike in FriluftsByn.

DISCOVERY: Cabin Accommodation
If you choose cabin accommodation, the standard option* is a shared camping cabin. You’ll have your own bunk bed, and we recommend sleeping on the lower bunk and using the upper bunk to keep your gear organised and easy to access.
Toilets and showers are available in the nearby service building.
Bring your own bed linen and towel. Before leaving the cabin on Sunday, you’ll help each other clean up. As you’ll be spending most of your time outdoors, this usually just means vacuuming and wiping down the table.
*If you’d prefer your own cabin, contact us and we’ll see what we can arrange. Email info@friluftsbyn.se
DISCOVERY: Tent Camping
If you choose to camp, you’ll pitch your tent in FriluftsByn, with access to a service building with showers and toilets.
In the evenings, we gather in one of FriluftsByn’s indoor spaces, and breakfast is served in Vardagsrummet.
This is a perfect option if you want to experience winter hiking and camping in a tent, while still having warmth and comfort close by.
How challenging is Discovery?
Discovery is three days of spectacular winter hiking through some of the High Coast’s greatest highlights. Each day takes you to a new area with snow-covered mountains, deep forests and incredible views – with a light daypack and FriluftsByn as your base.
You don’t need to be an experienced winter hiker. If you have a reasonable level of fitness, enjoy being active and arrive well prepared, you’ll be in a great position to enjoy both the hiking and the experience.
We’ve selected a great main route for each day. If you still have energy in your legs, you can add an extra summit or a longer route and discover even more of the High Coast.
You decide how far you want to take each day’s adventure – we’ll make sure there’s always more to discover.
What do I need to bring?
You’ll need clothing and personal gear for active winter days outdoors. Since we return to FriluftsByn after each day’s hike, you only need to carry what you need for the day.
Snowshoes are included, and before the adventure you’ll receive a complete packing list to help you arrive well prepared.
How does the hike work?
Each morning, we leave FriluftsByn and head to a new area of the High Coast. We arrange transport, but if you have your own car, you’re also welcome to drive along, giving you more flexibility to return to FriluftsByn at your own pace. Once there, a carefully selected route takes you through some of the area’s greatest highlights.
You hike at your own pace – on your own, with new friends or with the people you came with. Our guides are positioned at the front, at the back and at selected points along the route, so you don’t need to stay together with a guide.
The route is prepared ahead of the Winter Hike, and you’ll receive all the information you need before setting off. Weather and snow conditions may affect the route, so always follow the latest information from our guides.
If you still have energy in your legs, you can add an extra summit or a longer route at selected points and discover even more before continuing towards the day’s finish.
You find your own pace and decide how far you want to take each day’s adventure.
Can I make the hike longer?
Yes. The main route is designed to be a spectacular experience in itself – but if you still have energy in your legs, there’s more to discover.
At selected points, you can add an extra summit or a longer route. This way, everyone shares the same core adventure, while you can choose to make your day even bigger.
Food and drink
Meals are included during the adventure, and we make sure you have what you need for your days out in the winter landscape. During the hike, you eat whenever it suits your pace and the day’s plan. In the evening, we return to FriluftsByn and gather after the day’s adventures.
Thursday: Breakfast, freeze-dried lunch and dinner in FriluftsByn.
Friday: Breakfast, freeze-dried lunch and a cooked dinner in Skuleskogen National Park.
Saturday: Breakfast, freeze-dried lunch and dinner at the After-Hike.
Sunday: Breakfast.
Breakfast is served in FriluftsByn. Freeze-dried lunches are prepared on your own camping stove during the hike.
Do we hike together?
We experience Discovery together, but you hike at your own pace. Smaller groups often form naturally with participants who move at a similar speed.
You can hike on your own, with new friends or with the people you came with. Our guides are positioned at the front, at the back and at selected points along the route.
This gives you the freedom to hike your own way, while good company and support are never far away.
Is it easy to find the way?
Yes. The route is prepared ahead of the Winter Hike, and you’ll receive a map and information about each day’s stage.
Guides are positioned at the front, at the back and at selected points along the route. This means you’re free to find your own pace without having to follow a guide all day.
Weather and snow conditions may affect the route, so always follow the latest information from our guides.
What happens if the weather and conditions change?
Winter is part of the adventure. Weather, snow conditions and terrain can change quickly, so sometimes we need to adapt the day’s plan.
We have a clear plan to start from, but routes, distances and timings may be adjusted to keep the adventure as safe and enjoyable as possible.
You’ll always receive the latest information from our guides before and during each day’s hike.
Can I come by myself?
Absolutely – many people do.
Discovery is a very natural way to meet new people. You share accommodation, transport, hikes, meals and three days of adventures together.
During the day, it’s up to you whether you want to hike with others or find your own pace. In the evening, we meet up again in FriluftsByn.
You can come on your own – but you won’t experience the adventure alone.
