Winter’s great adventure

TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION & FOOD

Your winter adventure starts at FriluftsByn, right in the heart of Sweden’s UNESCO-listed High Coast. Getting here is easier than you might think: from Stockholm Arlanda Airport, it’s less than five hours by car, and many participants get to know eachother in the facebook participant group and carpool together from the airport or Stockholm.

If you prefer public transport, the Y-Buss takes you directly from Arlanda and Stockholm Central to Docksta, just a short walk away from FriluftsByn. Trains and domestic flights also make reaching the High Coast straightforward.

On this page, you’ll find practical details on travel, accommodation, meals, and what to bring.

TRAVEL TO THE HIGH COAST

The High Coast is closer than many imagine. Since most travelers have a sense of where Stockholm is, it helps to know that FriluftsByn is less than five hours by car from Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

Driving is the easiest option, and many participants choose to carpool. If you have room in your car, please post in the participant group. Likewise, if you’re looking for a ride, the group is the perfect place to connect with others.

Trains and domestic flights are also available, though you’ll need a connecting bus from Örnsköldsvik (the town where both the train and plane arrive) to reach the World Heritage area. These buses run on weekdays, but not on weekends — so for your return to Örnsköldsvik on Sunday, we recommend booking a taxi in advance to ensure a smooth connection to your train or flight.

If you prefer to travel entirely by bus, the Y-Buss runs from both Stockholm and Arlanda Airport along the northern coast, with connections to Umeå and Stockholm. And if you’d like personal assistance planning your trip, don’t hesitate to contact the local tourism information — you’ll find details just below.

Below, we’ve gathered the best travel options to help you get to and from the High Coast Winter Hike 2026 with ease.

TIP: Use the participant group

Make sure to use the participant group to coordinate travel. If you have space in your car or are willing to carpool with someone and share a soup, feel free to write in the group. One month before the adventure, we will also create a thread in the group encouraging you to share if you have space available or are open to traveling with someone.

TO FRILUFTSBYN

Most people arrive on Wednesday for the pre-event evening, check-in for the adventure, and just to get generally ready. Here’s how you can easily get to FriluftsByn on Wednesday.

CAR & CARPOOLING

By far the easiest option. Just enter FriluftsByn in Google Maps and head out. If you’re arriving late after work, we’ll hang the key on the door of the cabin you’ve booked.

TRAIN + BUS

On Wednesday, you can combine a train to Örnsköldsvik with local buses within the High Coast region. Buses run every hour between Örnsköldsvik Resecentrum and Docksta Bus Station. Usually the last bus departs around 18:15.

FROM FRILUFTSBYN

Most participants head home on Sunday. The following examples are for the return journey on Sunday.

CAR & CARPOOLING

We recommend that you get a good night’s sleep before heading home. Allow yourself a more relaxed morning and make sure not to plan your departure before 09:00, but you don’t need to check out of your booked cabin until 12:00.

TAXI + TRAIN

Trains depart from Örnsköldsvik at 10:02 and arrive at Arlanda Airport at 15:19 and Stockholm Central Station at 15:38. There are no weekend buses in Höga Kusten taking you between FrilufsByn and Örnsköldsvik, so taxi to Örnsköldsvik must be booked in advance.
