Winter’s great adventure

TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION & FOOD

The High Coast Winter Hike starts from FriluftsByn, located right in the World Heritage area of the High Coast. The easiest option is to drive or carpool, but with some planning, you can also combine flying or taking the train with a bus for the last leg of the journey.

On this page, we’ve also gathered accommodation options and clarified what food is included, what you should bring, and what alternatives are available before and after the adventure.

TRAVEL TO THE HIGH COAST

The High Coast is closer than many think. Since many people have some idea of how far Stockholm is, FriluftsByn and the High Coast are only 5 hours, two cups of coffee, and a few podcasts away by car, which is the easiest option. If you’re driving and have space in your car, please post in the participant group – you’ll find others who are happy to carpool. And of course, if you’d prefer to carpool with someone, feel free to post in the group as well.

Trains and flights are also available, but you’ll need to take a connecting bus from Örnsköldsvik to the World Heritage area. Buses run on weekdays, but unfortunately not on weekends, meaning you’ll have to book a taxi. However, on weekends, Y-Buses run along the northern coast, and on Sundays, you can take the bus with a short walk from FriluftsByn. The bus goes to both Umeå and Stockholm. Here, we’ve tried to compile our best options for traveling to and from the High Coast Winter Hike 2024.

TIP: Use the participant group

Make sure to use the participant group to coordinate travel. If you have space in your car or are willing to carpool with someone and share a soup, feel free to write in the group. One month before the adventure, we will also create a thread in the group encouraging you to share if you have space available or are open to traveling with someone.

TO FRILUFTSBYN

Most people arrive on Wednesday for the pre-event evening, check-in for the adventure, and just to get generally ready. Here’s how you can easily get to FriluftsByn on Wednesday.

CAR & CARPOOLING

By far the easiest option. Just enter FriluftsByn in Google Maps and head out. If you’re arriving late after work, we’ll hang the key on the door of the cabin you’ve booked.

TRAIN + BUS

On Wednesday, you can combine a train to Örnsköldsvik with local buses within the High Coast region. Buses run every hour between Örnsköldsvik Resecentrum and Docksta Bus Station from 15:15 to 18:15, with the last bus departing at 18:15.

FROM FRILUFTSBYN

Most participants head home on Sunday. The following examples are for the return journey on Sunday, February 10th, 2024. Since many participants pass through Stockholm on their way back, the examples below are based on departures from Stockholm.

CAR & CARPOOLING

We recommend that you get a good night’s sleep before heading home. Allow yourself a more relaxed morning and make sure not to plan your departure before 09:00, but you don’t need to check out of your booked cabin until 12:00.

TAXI + TRAIN

Trains depart from Örnsköldsvik at 10:00 and arrive at Stockholm Central Station at 15:38. There are no weekend buses in Höga Kusten, so taxi must be booked in advance.
Örntaxi, +46(0)660-10 000
Taxi Örnstaden, +46(0)660-55 000
Ullånger Taxi, +46(0)70-377 82 41

BUS: from 432 SEK

We have not yet seen the timetable, but on Sunday you can take the Y-bus directly from Docksta all the way to both Arlanda and Cityterminalen. The bus departs from Docksta at 14:05 and arrives at Stockholm Cityterminal at 21:30.
